Build—day one

Our build site is in the village of Redzynskie. We are working on a house for a family that includes a grandmother, mother and father, and six children, who live on a small farm with chickens, pigs, and cows. The family is currently living in one room, but Habitat has been working on this adjacent house for them since 2017.

The framing and brickwork had been done by prior groups, so after a quick orientation, we got started on measuring, cutting, and adhering exterior insulation. The installation consists of large sheets of styrofoam and we adhered them with spackle and extruded adhesive.

It was hard work in some intense sun. We started knowing nothing, but by the end were able to contribute in some meaningful ways. And we learned a lot about styrofoam in the process. The foreman told us that today was challenging, and tomorrow will likely be more difficult. Throughout the day, the family helped us, the mother bringing homemade cake, the daughter helping to collect scrap styrofoam and young son Kasper was the spackle king, mixing up all our batches!

  1. Wow. I’m really impressed. Interesting use of styrofoam and on the outside of a brick house? Crazy that Habitat has been working on the house for so long.
